U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order late on Tuesday that directed government agency chiefs to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector, the White House said.

The president wants to begin renegotiating a U.S. trade deal with Canada and Mexico earlier than a scheduled 2026 review, people familiar with his thinking said.

Employees in any federal diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility offices will be placed on paid administrative leave “effective immediately,” according to a post from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The firing comes amid Trump’s pledge to reshape the U.S. military and rid the nation of what he calls “woke” generals.

“We will not admit ICE agents into schools based on an administrative warrant, an ICE detainer, or any other document related to civil immigration enforcement,” Worcetser Superintendent Rachel H. Monarrez wrote in the email.
