Federal Judge Blocks Trump Administration’s Deployment of National Guard in Portland

A federal judge temporarily restrained the Trump administration from deploying National Guard soldiers in Portland, Oregon, in response to escalating efforts by the White House to militarize cities governed by Democrats, reports 24brussels.

Judge Karin Immergut issued a 14-day order on October 5, 2025, to review a lawsuit filed by the state of Oregon aimed at preventing the deployment of over 200 National Guard soldiers to Portland, where protests against immigration raids with racial bias have intensified. The legal complaint asserts that the Trump administration has exceeded its constitutional authority by misusing executive power.

The lawsuit states that rather than ensuring public safety, the administration’s aggressive and arbitrary decisions are undermining it by inciting public outrage. The president’s order for troop deployment followed Governor Tina Kotek’s rejection of a request from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to send in the Guard without state approval, an approach already seen in Illinois.

“President Trump???s unlawful federalization of members of the Oregon National Guard could cost taxpayers up to $10 million,” Kotek stated via X. Trump has frequently described Portland as a war-torn city; however, both Kotek and local officials refute his claims, emphasizing that the protests have largely remained peaceful and that they have the situation under control.

As tensions escalate, immigration officers are engaging in increased confrontations with protesters. Local media reports and eyewitness accounts have documented several arrests outside the ICE building, including footage of federal agents aggressively pursuing a demonstrator, forcibly bringing him to the ground, and using pepper spray while he remained on the ground.
