Exclusive: Surveillance video shows moment car hit grandmother in crosswalk on Long Island

A grandmother walking two young children to school was struck by a car in a Village of Babylon crosswalk, and neighbors say the intersection has been a longstanding safety concern. Suffolk County police say a 54-year-old man was making a left turn from Ralph Avenue onto Park Avenue around 8:30 a.m. when he hit a 68-year-old woman in the crosswalk. Exclusive surveillance video obtained by News 12 shows a crossing guard in the intersection gesturing for the driver to stop moments before the crash.
Neighbors say the woman was walking her grandchildren to Babylon Grade School and managed to push their wagon out of the way just before impact. The children were not hurt. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.
